History Book Club – February Reads, March 8th 2:30pm TRHS Library
The History Book Club will be reading the following two books:
Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin
The author, a white man, recounts his experiences when he darkened his skin and traveled through the South as an African-American man. The novel provides an absorbing view of life before the Civil Rights movement, showing the difficulties of being black in America.
and
My Mother the Cheerleader by Robert Sharenow
Set in 1960, Sharenow’s debut novel begins just after the Supreme Court ruled segregation unconstitutional and Ruby Bridges became the first black student to attend William J. Frantz Elementary in New Orleans’s Ninth Ward. Thirteen-year-old Louise uncovers secrets about her family and her neighborhood during the violent protests and vicious actions of ordinary people over school desegregation.
